In Memory of Jean Tobman

Remembering Mrs. Tobman, February 27, 1926 - April 23, 2016

Jean Tobman was a supporter of WestCare since its earliest days when it was known as Fitzhouse. She and her late husband Herb were instrumental in helping WestCare to provide services for thousands of men, women, and children in Las Vegas. They were strong supporters of WestCare for over 40 years with Jean preferring to work quietly behind the scenes.

"Jean never wanted any attention or recognition" recalls Darlene Terrill, Director of Development in Nevada. "She had a special fondness for the Women and Children's Campus. Whenever they needed something, it appeared thanks to Jean." Jean's philanthropic endeavors also included donating to the University of Nevada School of Medicine for an ongoing scholarship and providing for UNR’s medical school student lounge which is named after the Tobmans. She also supported veterans and contributed to the business and athletic departments at UNLV.

"She truly embodied our motto of 'uplifting the human spirit'. We have lost a great leader and friend. She will truly be missed," said President and CEO Richard Steinberg. Jean's compassion, commitment, personal and financial contributions were exceptional. "Jean and Herb were both supporters and Board Members from the start and were extremely helpful with our fundraising efforts all the way back to our beginning when we were FitzHouse" said Mike Lavin, Senior Vice President of Operations.

The Tobman family says they will ensure Jean's philanthropic spirit lives on. "You know, she was the whole thing," her daughters said. "She was the matriarch and the glue for this family; now it's going to be up to the next generation to continue that legacy." The Tobman's daughter, Marilyn Moran, is doing just that. She's a current WestCare National Board member and Vice-Chair of the Nevada Community Action Council. Her husband, John, serves on the FitzHouse Board and volunteers his time on policy related issues that impact WestCare services.

Jean is survived by her three daughters, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, and one grandson.
