Uniquely Us: Understanding Race and Building Unity with the DoSeum

By Alisa Garza, Executive Assistant & Operations Coordinator

On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, WestCare Texas (WCTX) was invited to the DoSeum to participate in the Uniquely Us workshop. The Uniquely Us workshop will be turned into a computer game in February 2025 called Uniquely Us: Understanding Race and Building Unity. WCTX served as a focus group to provide input on how to address racism through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles. Additionally, the city-building workshop addressed capacity building on how to recognize and combat disparities and share resources. After watching a short video on the history of racism and excluded populations in America, the staff was split into groups, where each person received unequal amounts of resources such as nature, water, electricity, and internet based on the neighborhood they were assigned. Then, they were given a final score depending on how they helped allocate resources in their city. Chris, the Director of School and Community Programs at the DoSeum, stated that, “The game is meant to be fast and played again to attain different equity scores each time. We hope that it will spark conversations between family members on DEI.”

The DoSeum is a children’s museum that focuses on STEM education through the art of play, and they cover topics ranging from solar power to wind power to city-building and more. Thank you to the DoSeum for having us!
